Tapping - Schmapping! You Gotta Be Kidding Me! EFT Explained

EFT Mona Lisa Tapping Points
You might have heard about this new healing technique called EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique.

It is a simple intervention that is based on the concepts of acupuncture. In fact, it has been called "acupuncture without needles." The idea is that the energy flow of the body gets disrupted and this, then, causes emotional upset which can lead to physical challenges. Instead of having the acupuncturist strategically place needles along energy meridians, the individual can use her own two fingers to tap four - seven times on nine points of the body. If I haven't lost you so far, you can learn more about this by going to my page called What is Energy Psychology?  You can also read a few testimonials by people with whom I have used EFT.  Click on the link just under my blog banner. And, you can go to the EFT Universe Website and watch a few demonstration videos and read thousands of testimonials.

In a matter of minutes, it is possible to collapse major emotional trauma that years of talk therapy have not been able to heal. Anxiety, depression, guilt, resentment, and specific traumatic events are all common issues that EFT can address. "If this is such an effective technique, why haven't I heard about it?" you may ask.

Well, you are hearing about it today, and more and more people have heard about "that tapping thing."  When I ask a typical class of 30 students, at least seven or eight have heard of EFT tapping and often a few of them have experienced it on their own or in therapy.

I want to jump ahead here and talk about one specific part of the EFT tapping process. There seems to be some confusion about the role of the Set Up Statement. The Set Up Statement for the person using EFT for a panic attack, for example, would be, "Even though I am having a panic attack right now, I deeply and completely love and accept myself." The person inserts whatever the presenting problem is and then finishes with "...I deeply and completely love and accept myself."  This statement is repeated three times, while tapping on the Karate Chop point (the flesh of your hand that hits the surface if you were to do a Karate Chop). I know this must sound very bizarre to you if you have never heard of this before. Right now, please place both of your hands on your head and try to pry open your mind for just a few minutes longer. I want to explain the premise of the Set Up Statement.

The energy of the Universe is love energy. When all is functioning according to original intention, love energy is flowing in and out and around all of us all of the time. Thoughts are energy. Lots of research has demonstrated the effect of thoughts on outcome. I won't go into all of that now. Every single thought has an energetic signature. Imagine an EEG readout.

EFT EEG Graph of Electrical Spikes Blue on Black
The thought, "I think I will pick up some milk today at the store" has an energetic signature (neutral). The thought, "My newborn baby is so beautiful" has an energetic signature (love). The thought, "I hate that person; he betrayed me" has an energetic signature (anger/fear). While you are watering your flower garden, "I really enjoy my beautiful flowers" has an energetic signature (love). While you are having that thought, you are projecting that energy outward as well as inward. Thought energy that is consistent with the Energy of the Universe - Love - flows freely. It is fast frequency, expansive, and is a blessing outwardly and inwardly. Thought energy that is contrary to the Energy of the Universe - Fear - causes energy blockage. It results in energy contraction, is slow frequency
, and is ultimately destructive. By the way, your body is composed of many things, including electrical energy and water. Water conducts electricity. Interesting coincidence, huh?

The purpose of the Set Up Statement is to accentuate the energy blockage that is caused by the fear based thought (anger, resentment, guilt, etc...) or physical pain in order to clear it.  Sometimes, the energy blockage is so severe that it causes energetic polarity reversal - like when you put the brand new flashlight batteries EFT Battery for Polarity Reversalin backwards. What happens? The flashlight won't work. EFT won't work either, if this polarity reversal is in place. To reverse the reversal, we use the Set Up Statement to replace the fear based energy with love energy, - "I deeply and completely love and accept myself,"  which paves the way for EFT to be effective. We are "setting up" the system for the EFT tapping round that will follow. Psychological Reversal is like the Main circuit breaker of the house that has been tripped off. After that Main is back online (Psychological Reversal has been fixed), then we can go around and clear the various subcircuits (Meridian Points) that are blocked. EFT follows the same concept. We hold the fear-based thought while tapping. We clearly create the energetic blockage so that we can clearly tap it away.

Talk therapy has been only half of the equation. Many people have gotten some relief by talking about their issues. Cognitive Therapy is EFT without the tapping part. And the tapping part is the essential part because, as Gary Craig, the founder of EFT said, "The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system."  He did not say, "The cause of all negative emotions is negative thinking." The most complete way to put it would be, "The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system caused by fear-based thoughts."

In this post, I have tried to explain a little bit about the conceptual foundation for EFT and how it works. When our energy is in alignment with Love, then everything unfolds in a way that is consistent with highest good. When we lose sight of the Truth, we go into fear and then energetic congestion occurs.  What is the antidote for fear? Love.  "I deeply and completely love and accept myself." Remember the power of that phrase whether you tap along with it or not. And yes, that phrase has power whether you believe it right now or not. Happy tapping!

How powerful the mind is.

So, if one is depressed, do you input depression in the EFT Set Up statement as a whole? Or should you input the specific reason why they are depressed in the EFT Set Up statement? I'm guessing you would input depression in the EFT Set Up statement as a whole to reveal the underlying problem.
I hope this makes sense....

Great question. It is best to make the Set Up statement as accurately descriptive as possible, without making a long, unwieldy sentence. "Even though I feel such hopeless despair, I deeply and completely love and accept myself" is better than "Even though I feel depressed, I deeply and completely love and accept myself." It is more important to be as accurate as possible in describing the exact nature of the feeling/physical pain than it is to include what you think caused it. I hope this helps.
